Maiden Castle, The Brewers Arms, Martinstown, Dorset |
This walk follows a footpath behind the houses of Martinstown and a track via Clandon Farm to Maiden Castle. It returns to Martinstown along a footpath through the valley of the South Winterborne stream. Extend the walk to 5 miles or 8 Km by walking around the inner rampart of Maiden Castle. It is well worth exploring Maiden Castle for the views over the surrounding countryside.
See the detailed walk directions. Alternatively download the picture guide [help] for this walk.
Maiden Castle is the largest and most complex Iron Age hill fort in Britain. The castle was first laid out in 600BC over the remains of a Neolithic settlement. During the following centuries the hill fort was extended. In 43 AD it was captured by the Roman army and its inhabitants moved to the new town of Durnovaria, modern Dorchester. Maiden Castle is an English Heritage property.
