Tarrant Rushton, Dorset, South West England

Buy Prints[help]

During the Second World War the quiet Dorset village of Tarrant Rushton was disturbed by the construction and operation of an RAF Airfield on its doorstep. Gliders based at Tarrant Rushton landed the first troops in Normandy on D-Day, 6th of June 1944. The airfield remained in operation until 1980.

Today the airfield has been returned to agriculture. The control tower has gone but a number of hangers and the perimeter road still remain.

On the B3082 between Blandford Forum and Wimborne Minster, turn off towards Tarrant Rushton at the The True Lovers Knot pub. Drive past Tarrant Rushton and Tarrant Rawston then take the turning towards Witchampton. Park near the airfield memorial located at a sharp turn in the road.

Note: There is very limited parking available here.
